Volcanoes, Lakes, and the Dirty 30

We came here with a group of friends who all turned 30 within the same three weeks - so naturally, we had to go all out. Guatemala was the perfect place to celebrate, with its stunning volcanoes, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Plus, with the trip falling over the Fourth of July, it was a double celebration in true adventure style!

Turning 30 in Style

When a few of our friends were all hitting the big 3-0 within the same few weeks, we knew we couldn’t just settle for a basic birthday dinner. Nope, we had to go big. After tossing around a few destination ideas, we landed on Guatemala - and more specifically, Lake Atitlán. An incredible Airbnb right on the lake, complete with volcano views? Say less.

Planes, Boats, and Automobiles

Coming from San Diego, Zak and I had quite the trek. After flying into Guatemala City, we still had 5 hours of travel ahead of us. First, we had to book a private driver to get us to the port, then hop on a boat to reach our Airbnb. Basically, we took every mode of transportation short of a donkey ride. But when we finally got there? Absolutely worth it.

Fourth of July: Lake Edition

Our first full day just so happened to be the Fourth of July, so obviously, we went full send on the decorations. Think red, white, and blue mixed with birthday banners - it was a sight. Most of the day was spent soaking up the lake life: jumping in the water, kayaking, lounging, and just catching up. That night, we had a private chef cook us an amazing dinner while we played games, laughed, and celebrated making it to 30 in one piece.

Exploring, Caffeine, and Peak Relaxation

By day two, we were ready to get out and explore. We started with a yoga flow overlooking the lake and volcano because, you know, balance. Then we wandered into town for breakfast before heading off on a coffee tour. Fun fact: Guatemala is one of the top coffee producers in the world, thanks to its volcanic soil. Which totally explains why we drank way too much of it. To balance out the caffeine jitters, we booked massages on our private patio. Pure bliss. Later that night, we hit the town for dinner and a few bars - Guatemala may not be Vegas, but it definitely knows how to have a good time.

ATVs, Lava, and a Rainy Adventure

On our third day, we made our way back to Guatemala City, but not before signing up for an ATV volcano and lava tour. It was cold, rainy, and we were completely drenched - but honestly, that just made it more fun. Nothing like cruising through misty lava fields feeling like you're in an action movie. After a much-needed warm shower, we went out for our last dinner in Guatemala City, where we were serenaded by a full mariachi band singing happy birthday. The food? Insane. The vibes? Immaculate.

Wrapping Up an Unforgettable Trip

This trip had it all - adventure, relaxation, unreal views, and way too much coffee. But the best part? Celebrating with friends we don’t get to see nearly enough. Guatemala was the perfect mix of chaos and beauty, and we left with full hearts, hilarious memories, and a strong urge to book another trip ASAP.
